In the 90’s battle of Hip Hop vs Techno, like most hip
hop heads, I was that b-girl that was like “I HATE
techno. I don’t understand it. You have to be on drugs
to get that sh*t. It has no soul.”
Well, it’s a new decade and thank god I’m not one of
those people who keeps hugging on to pre-2000 hip hop
alone as the only “good” music that is worth enjoying.
In the last year I started drumming
batucada/Brazillian style. That has opened me up into
a whole new rhythm family. Springboarding off my
adolescent crush on freestyle music, and with the help
of friends, I’ve discovered downtempo, ambient,
jungle, drum n bass, garage and yes.. soulful HOUSE
music. If I ever thought there was a hell of a lot of
music to hash through in the urban world.. I was
sorely mistaken. In order to understand and education

It’s hard to keep up and I can clearly discern that I
don’t enjoy about 80% of this new cosmos (things like:
hard house, ghetto tech, hard acid, death trance, and
oh god (!!!) painful-ass speedcore). If someone wanted
to psychologically torture me, tha’d be the one, and
I’d go quick. It’s sheer sensory abuse. But generally
speaking, liking 20% is about par-for-course for hip
hop too. I can declare I’m consistently selective
across the board.
So, I of course, would like to share a short list of
